How to Start Your Bible Study with the Perfect Opening Prayer

By Melody Lou on September 8, 2024September 14, 2024

When I first started Bible study, I didn’t realize how important an opening prayer for Bible study could be. Over time, though, I noticed that it helped set the tone and really deepened my understanding of Scripture. So, if you’re like me and want to connect with God right from the start, let’s talk about some simple ways to start your study with a prayer that truly opens your heart to what God has to say.

Why Start with an Opening Prayer for Bible Study?

Honestly, it’s easy to jump right into Scripture, but taking a moment for pre-study prayer creates the perfect space for spiritual insight. Praying before you dive into your Bible isn’t just a formality—it’s a way to invite the Holy Spirit into your study. It helps you stay focused and open-minded to what God’s trying to teach you.

How to Pray Before Reading the Bible

Sometimes, I struggle to find the right words to say before starting. I like to keep my prayer for guidance before Bible study super simple. I ask God to help me understand what I’m reading, give me wisdom, and let His words impact my heart.

If you’re new to this, try something like:
“Lord, please open my heart and mind to Your Word. Help me understand what I’m about to read and let it shape my life for the better. Amen.”

Pray scripture

Another way to pray before getting into the Word is by praying scripture.

Here are some scriptures you can pray before studying the Bible to help prepare your heart and mind:

Psalm 119:18
“Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.”

  • Pray for God to open your spiritual eyes to understand His Word.

James 1:5
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given to him.”

  • Ask for wisdom and understanding as you read.

Psalm 119:105
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

  • Ask God to guide you through His Word.

2 Timothy 3:16-17
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

  • Acknowledge the power of God’s Word and ask for it to equip you.

Colossians 3:16
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom.”

  • Pray for the Word of Christ to deeply enrich your life.

Ephesians 1:17-18
“That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened.”

  • Ask for spiritual insight and revelation as you study.

Praying these scriptures help you to align your heart with God’s will and seek His guidance as you study His Word!

Plus, it’s a great reminder that you’re not reading just any book—you’re diving into God’s Word. By praying, you acknowledge that the Bible is alive and active, and you’re asking for God’s guidance to help you grasp its message.

This pre-study prayer doesn’t have to be fancy or long. The key is to make it personal and heartfelt. And, if you pray like this regularly, you’ll find it easier to hear God’s voice during your study.

Make Prayer a Regular Part of Your Bible Study Routine

In the end, including an opening prayer for Bible study is more than just a habit. It’s a powerful way to connect with God and ensure your heart is ready to receive His Word. Whether it’s a quick pre-study prayer or a more thoughtful prayerful reflection, praying before Bible study can make all the difference in how much you gain from your time in Scripture.

So, next time you sit down to study, start with prayer—you’ll be amazed at how it transforms your experience!
